“I am only resolved to act in that manner, which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you, or to any person so wholly unconnected with me.” – Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
One of my all-time favorite literary heroines is Miss Elizabeth Bennet, and she resides within the pages of my most cherished book. Elizabeth says everything out loud in such an eloquent way that I cannot help but feel as though Jane Austen was using the character to say all the things she wished she could say in polite society.
Elizabeth’s refusal to conform to societal norms is nothing short of awe-inspiring. She fearlessly speaks her mind without apology. She adamantly rejects the notion of marrying solely for familial or financial gain, refusing to feign enjoyment in the company of those she finds disagreeable, and fiercely guarding the boundaries of her personal life.
Admittedly, Elizabeth’s unwavering commitment to candor comes with its own set of challenges. It requires a man of equal forthrightness to capture her heart, and her unvarnished opinions sometimes lead to strained relationships with friends and family whom she finds at odds with her convictions. However, for those fortunate enough to earn her respect and trust, they discover in her an unwavering advocate and devoted ally, unremitting in her loyalty and steadfast in her support.
Elizabeth is my soul sister. I highly recommend reading Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice at least once in your life.
