What a fantastic metaphor for life. It’s a bitter pill to swallow but sometimes you do have to feel the pain and endure the hardship to learn the lesson. I draw upon all of my experiences when I write – good, bad, ugly. Only when you’ve experienced pain and true joy, can you write about it in a way the reader can feel it.

A mix of confusion and happiness filled his soul when he found her standing in his doorway.
vs.
As he opened the door, a rush of emotions came flooding back in a bittersweet blend of joy and longing, setting his heart racing. The past and present collided like a dormant volcano suddenly awakening. He stood there, momentarily stunned, the jitters of uncertainty coursing through him, unsure of the socially appropriate next move, caught between the desire to embrace her and the need to preserve what was left of his heart.
