Enna knew he was fishing for something but she couldn’t figure out what it was. He had a way of asking questions to furnish an answer to the question he didn’t ask.
“I didn’t want a high school guy.”
“Why me?” he asked again.
Enna ran her fingers along the felt, searching the floor for a clever reply but her mind was blank. Ryan pulled the cue out of her hand and tossed it on the table with his. He took her face in his palms, forcing her to look him in the eyes. Tears pooled there but none fell.
“I was never cut out for your games,” she whispered.
“No games,” his eyes fell to her strawberry-colored lips and back to her eyes. “Why me?”
“There was never anyone else for me,” she swallowed hard. “There never will be.”
